Chrome added vertical tabs. Here's the catch.
Chrome 147 ships vertical tabs natively. Right-click any tab, hit Show Tabs Vertically, and your tab strip moves to a sidebar where you can actually read the titles. Reading mode also went full-page: right-click a page, Open in reading mode, and the clutter disappears.
There's no keyboard shortcut to toggle them. To switch between vertical and horizontal, you have to use the right-click menu. Tab search still lives behind Ctrl/⌘ + Shift + A.
So the display problem is solved. The organization problem isn't.
Three places vertical tabs help
Deep double-digit tab counts. Past ~12 tabs, the horizontal strip turns into a row of unreadable favicons. Vertical mode fits ~29 with titles intact.
Tab groups you live in. Groups carry over to the sidebar with their colors and labels. Collapse the ones you're not using, keep the active one open.
Narrow content, wide screen. Reading a doc or article? Drop the page into full-page reading mode and let the sidebar hold everything else you've got open.
Where Partizion picks up
Vertical tabs let you see your tabs. They don't isolate projects, and Chrome's session restore is all-or-nothing — you can't pull back one research session from this morning without dragging everything else with it.
Auto-updating collections close that gap. Make a collection, turn on auto-update, and it saves your session as you work:
- Tabs save themselves as you open and close them
- Close a window, reopen it later exactly how you left it
- Everything syncs to the cloud, so a crash doesn't cost you anything
- Auto-update toggles per collection, so only the projects you want stay live
Readable sidebar up front, collections saving in the background. That's the whole setup.
