We believe too many companies have failed us. Everyone deserves a reliable Tab Session Manager that cares about their privacy and doesn't track it's users, is maintained and sustainable, doesn't bombard them with ads, and doesn't auction off their data.
Partizion is:
- NOT free, our customers are our investors
- Has NO ads
- Is sustainable (We're 5+ years old and going strong)
- We have 0 tracking software
- We don't sell your data
Some tab session manager extensions might not charge you, but their product is certainly not truly “free.” You have to ask, what does this cost?
If they don't charge you, will the extension be maintained? Is it sustainable?
If the extension is maintained and it's free, how do they maintain it?
Do they care about my privacy? Do they show ads? Are they selling my data?
Free software is Abandoned
Free software isn't maintained at best, is abandoned at worst.
1000s of tab managers have been released on the Chrome store. Less than 5% of them are maintained. Year after year users complain that they can no longer access the tabs they saved in some tab manager developer years ago and since abandoned.
OneTab frequently breaks, despite having millions of users.
SessionBuddy loses tabs all the time, and has had one update in the last 3 years.
Free software sells your data or shows you Ads
Don't be fooled. The "free" software you use either isn't maintained or the developers make money in another way. Selling Ads or selling your data. At Partizion, we'd rather not have Ads shown to us or our personal data sold in our own personal library of tabs.
Free software gets shut down
Google offered a "free" bookmark manager. Google Bookmarks was offered in 2014 and then after many years — after users saved millions of tabs and organized their work — Google decided to shut Google Bookmarks down, most likely because they couldn't monetize is and didn't want to maintain the service.
The Great Suspender, which had millions of users and was "free", was shut down by Google because they installed tracking software and malware on everyone's browser that installed the extension.
Users complain all the time that the Chrome store has started warning them that extensions contain malware.
More than 5 years ago we set out to build a tab session manager for chrome.
Along the way, many "free" tab managers have been abandoned, sold their users data, and were even banned from the Chrome Store because they were found to have tracking software.
Partizion has no Ads. There is no tracking malware. We don't and will never sell user data. We care about privacy and security, and we're building Partizion for many years to come. In return, we ask that you pay a small fee to support the ongoing development and maintenance.
Software either dies or thrives. One way to ensure that software thrives is to pay the developers. It's not the only way, but it's a pretty reliable method. This means new features, bug fixes, and general improvement of the software. Partizion is a paid model because we want to build a tab manager for the long haul. We want our paying users to be able to rely on Partizion to save, search, and restore there tabs many years in to the future.
Incentives. When your app has lots of free users and some paid users, the amount of bugs, scaling issues, feature requests, and support needed exponentially grows. Worse yet, most of this feedback comes from non-paying users.
We're building an app based on the feedback of our paying users. This means our users get new features and support that they actually want. Our incentives (build a great app) are aligned with our users (buy a great app).
There are many free alternatives to Partizion. Including tab session manager, Session Buddy, and tablerone.
But is it really free? How can you be sure this developer and extension take your privacy and security into concern? How do you know if this developer will fix bugs and build features? What's stopping the developer from completely abandoning the extension? Or worse, selling it to some nefarious owners who will mine your data?
Thank you to our customers who support us — we love you.
Thank you to Fathom Analytics and Steph Ango for writing about this.
